“Radiation and You”

The members of the East Tennessee Chapter of the Health Physics Society will present a free public seminar entitled “Radiation and You” on Friday, March 2, 2012, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Pollard Auditorium in Oak Ridge, TN.  Local experts in radiation safety, nuclear medicine and nuclear engineering will deliver short presentations on topics including radiation basics, natural radioactivity, uses and regulation of radioactive material and details regarding the accident at Fukushima Japan.  Following the presentations, industry professionals will be available to answer questions on related topics, and attendees will be able to “see” radiation in a cloud chamber and handle radiation detection instruments.

Refreshments will be provided following the presentations.

In keeping with the Health Physics Society's mission, "to encourage scientific, professional and public education" as it pertains to excellence in the science and practice of radiation safety, the ETCHPS has agreed to sponsor and support public outreach and training sessions in East Tennessee areas near nuclear facilities (i.e. Erwin, Oak Ridge and Chattanooga). Henry Lynn is organizing this effort and presented the idea to the chapter during the June 8, 2010 program meeting. The slides are included here for all to view.  The pilot of this effort has now been scheduled for the evening of March 2, 2012 at Pollard Auditorium in Oak Ridge.

At the Dec 8, 2011 Vendor's Meeting, he provided a poster to be presented May 13-18, 2012, in Glasgow, Scotland (IRPA 13).  He also provided the current Proposed Public Training Schedule.  Both are available here.

Volunteers are needed to help develop materials or make presentations. Please let Henry know by sending a note to his home email address at henryslynn@comcast.net if you are willing to help.

(map)

  Tour begins at 5:30 PM

Teledyne Brown Engineering has invited the Chapter to tour their Knoxville facility on May 22 at 5:30 PM. The tour will provide an overview of their 25,000 square foot laboratory and extensive inventory of nuclear counting equipment. The tour will take approximately 30 - 40 minutes. A brief security form must be completed in order to visit the facility. You can either complete the form in advance and bring it with you or fill out a form at the door.

Teledyne Brown Engineering is a supplier of radioanalytical services for the nuclear power industry, waste processors, and environmental consultants. They analyze samples from low level bioassay to higher level waste characterization samples.  Teledyne Brown Engineering holds NELAP certification, are NUPIC audited, and hold certifications in both Utah and Texas (and other states). They have been located in Knoxville for 12 years and were previously located in Westwood New Jersey for over 25 years.

Immediately following the tour, you are invited to join us at Double Dogs Chow House, a family-friendly sports bar and grill located just minutes from Teledyne at the corner of Pellissippi and Hardin Valley (10639 Hardin Valley Road). We have reserved an area on their porch, where you are free to order food and/or beverages from the menu and network with other chapter members.

There is no cost for the tour and Double Dogs is simply pay for what you’ve ordered. Please RSVP to tom@ameriphysics.com and let me know if you are RSVP-ing for the tour, DD’s, or both.
