NATURE AND SCOPE OF JOB
The Hazards Control Department/ES&H Teams Division has openings for Health Physicists to provide comprehensive health physics support to various LLNL programs. The selected candidates will provide support and guidance to other ES&H Team members in the area of health physics. Will interact with all levels of personnel in the organizations supported, including managers, experimenters, technicians, and other personnel in the Hazards Control Department to provide coordinated ES&H support.
Will report to one of the two ES&H Team Leaders.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Provide health physics support to LLNL programs in specific areas of assignment.
- Establish appropriate personnel dosimetry, bioassay, and whole-body counting programs and evaluate the results of these monitoring programs.
- Evaluate and provide radiation safety input to safety procedures and to facility, equipment, and shielding designs.
- Collaborate with and provide guidance to team clients on all matters related to radiation protection.
- Provide feedback to management regarding the effectiveness of the radiation safety program in their areas of responsibility.
- Provide emergency response support to radiological incidents on-site.
- Participate in the investigation of incidents or accidents involving radiation and make recommendations in order to prevent a reoccurrence.
- Provide health physics support during audits, inspections, and site verifications by internal and external agencies.
- Provide selected training in radiation safety to personnel in the assigned area.
- Develop a health physics Discipline Action Plan (DAP) for the area(s) covered.
- Conduct building inspections to identify and evaluate potential hazards related to health physics and provide guidance for analyzing such hazards in the future.
- Attend regularly scheduled Health Physics technical meetings.
MARGINAL DUTIES
- Participate in specific projects related to the institutional radiation safety program at LLNL.
- Provide support to off-site radiological incidents.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES
- Bachelors Degree in Health Physics, Radiation Physics, or Radiation Protection, or equivalent level of demonstrated knowledge.
- Several years experience in comprehensive health physics or a related field.
- Experience providing emergency response and participating in the investigation of incidents or accidents involving radiation.
- Experience with personal computer hardware and software.
- Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience conducting presentations and technical training.
- Ability to interact professionally with others, work effectively independently and in a team environment.
- Ability to work effectively during emergency response activities.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 30 lbs.
- Ability to become medically qualified to wear respiratory and protection equipment.
- Ability to secure and maintain certification in the Human Reliability Program (HRP) which includes: polygraph examination; and physical and psychological assessment; and random drug and alcohol testing.
DESIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES
- Masters Degree in Health Physics, Radiation Physics, Radiation Protection or related field.
- Certification by the American Board of Health Physics.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.
- Pre Employment Drug Test: External applicants selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
- Anticipated Clearance Level: Q (Position will be cleared to this level).
- Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.
