Title: Radiological Control Technician I

Description: LRRI is seeking a Radiological Control Technician who will support the area of radiological protection ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations by measuring, assessing, and documenting radiological conditions in the workplace. Ability to understand and apply basic health physics fundamentals, including, but not limited to, radiation detection and radiological instrument operation. An understanding of applicable OSHA, EPA, NRC, and DOT related regulations. This position involves a significant amount of interface with research and development staff, facility operations, and maintenance personnel in the performance of required duties and planning of work activities to ensure procedure compliance. A high school diploma or GED is required plus a minimum of one (1) year experience working with radioactive materials and radiation generating devices. An Associate's degree (AAS) in health physics or radiological science and one to three (1-3) years experience as a radiological control technician or equivalent combination of directly related education and experience is highly desired. Must be able to demonstrate good computer skills with an emphasis on Microsoft Office Suite and have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Training in shipping Class 7 materials under both DOT and IATA is desired.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment:
Successful completion of a post offer, pre-employment physical examination/medical history check is required. Individual will also be required to have medical clearance and ability to wear a variety of respiratory protection devices, as well as protective clothing and equipment for extended periods of time. Individual will be subject to a Trustworthy and Reliable determination as outlined by the requirements of Increased Controls as promulgated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and employment is contingent upon a favorable result. In addition, successful completion of CDC/DOJ, DOD approval to access Select Agent(s) and Toxin(s) may be required. Work environment may require vaccinations/immunizations as a condition of employment. Work environment may include extremes of hot and cold and may require working in a confined space. Position requires infrequent heavy lifting (up to 100 pounds) with assistance, carrying, and handling of hazardous and radioactive materials. Individual must possess a valid driver’s license (comparable to NM Class D) that would permit the transport of materials and equipment on behalf of LRRI between campuses. May also be required to operate a forklift and travel between our South and North Campus.

Title: Health Physicist/Radiological Engineer

The Radiation Protection Department at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) is seeking a Health Physicist/Radiological Engineer to provide operational radiation protection support for SNL line organizations and the Corporate Radiation Protection Program. Health Physicists/Radiological Engineers perform radiological hazard evaluations, recommend controls, design and implement radiological protection safety programs, assess program effectiveness and implementation, and provide general technical support to operations personnel and Radiological Control Technologists. Other duties may include; assisting with the characterization of radiological hazards, establishing radiological monitoring protocols, conducting dose assessments, assisting with incident review and analysis, and generating lessons learned. Health Physicists/Radiological Engineers also respond to and direct others in incident and emergency response situations.

Required Criteria
1. A Masters degree in health physics, nuclear engineering, or closely related field, although a bachelor degree and CHP certification would also be considered qualified.
2. Minimum of fifteen years of professional-level experience in operational health physics.
3. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
4. Strong interpersonal and customer relation skills.
5. Ability to work individually and in teamed/matrixed situations.
6. Computer skills, including working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
7. United States citizenship in order to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q security clearance.
8. A strong and proactive desire to improve the radiological protection program at SNL.
9. Demonstrated organizational and leadership skills.
10. A working knowledge of applicable occupational radiation protection and quality assurance rules including 10CFR835, 10CFR830, and/or 10CFR20.

Desired Criteria
1. Certification or eligible for certification by the American Board of Health Physics.
2. Previous operational radiation protection experience in one or more of the following activities; accelerators, reactors, waste management, environmental restoration, research and development using radioactive material or radiation generating devices, or conducting self-assessments.
3. Demonstrated ability to direct and mentor RCTs.
