Non-RCRA Regulated Liquid Scintillation Cocktails Liquid scintillation counting provides a powerful tool for radioactivity measurement. However, many liquid scintillation fluids (cocktails) contain hazardous chemicals or exhibit hazardous characteristics that cause these products to be regulated under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). RCRA-regulated wastes must be managed according to strict regulatory guidelines and generally cost more to dispose of than non-RCRA regulated types. Therefore, it's always better to use a non-RCRA regulated LSC fluid whenever possible. The following fluids are not RCRA regulated. Often these fluids are marketed as "biodegradable" or "safe", although they're really not either (don't drink any LSC fluid). However, they are less hazardous than RCRA-regulated varieties.
