Greetings from CAMD
News from the Center for Advanced
Microstructures and Devices (CAMD) at Louisiana State University continues to be anything but rosy. We have
secured funds for a multipole super-conducting
wiggler and an undulator, which of course is a good
thing. On the other hand, the state will cut higher education anywhere
from 50 to 125 million in addition to the devastating cuts we received this
past year. These budget deficits will play havoc for all of our
states and hence our ability to secure sufficient funds to carry out health
physics to the best of our abilities. The health of the state has already
made it impossible to host our normal radiological engineering short course,
due to lack of participation. Many of our students derive from the
State’s Department of Environmental Quality, where we train new employees
on the fundamentals of health physics. This means the economy continues
to take its toll in unforeseen ways. Baton Rouge, however, still
ranks #10 as the best place to live during this recession. Wishing
each a better year than 2009.
Sincerely,
Lorraine
