FROM THE OFFICERS The President's
Message Have you ever asked yourself, what is an accelerator health
physicist? Maybe not, but probably your relatives or neighbors have! Did you
have a good, comprehensive answer for them? Now there is help and its as close as the Accelerator Section
website. But first, a little background . . . The Health Physics Societys Science Support Committee is
developing tools for high school teachers to make them aware of career
opportunities in health physics. These tools include a poster that teachers
can hang in their classrooms, a PowerPoint presentation that they can show to
their students as part of the career awareness curriculum, and booth banners
for science teacher meetings to promote the society and what we have to offer
to science teachers. To promote accelerator health physics, the Science Support
Committee asked us to define our roles and to provide photos of accelerator
health physicists on the job. In response, the sections president-elect,
Mike Grissom, drafted a definition and backed it up with a white paper. The President Elects

OTHER NEWS Klaus
Gbel 1926 - 2009 Reprinted with
permission from GAC-EPA.org. Klaus Goebel, an early leading figure in
radiation protection at CERN, passed away on 1 October 2009. Klaus came to CERN in 1956 together with
Wolfgang Gentner for whom he had worked as
assistant from 1954-55, after gaining a diploma in economics and a doctorate
in physics at the university of Freiburg, Germany. During these early
years at the Laboratory, Klaus measured isotope concentrations in meteorites
and as leader of the Spallation Research Group he
used the Synchrocyclotron (SC) to measure isotope production by protons. Announcement: SATIF Meeting at CERN, June 2-4,
2010 The tenth meeting
of the task force on Shielding Aspects of Accelerators, Targets and
Irradiation Facilities (SATIF) will take place at
CERN on 2-4 June 2010. The main objectives of the SATIF meetings are to: From
Linnea Wahl and Scott Schwahn Dear Colleagues, We are honored that
the Accelerator Section took the time and effort to nominate us to the HPS Board of Directors. We are both excited to serve the
Society in our new roles and will do our best to faithfully fulfill our
duties to the betterment of the Society and to the Health Physics community at
large. A special thanks to Kamran Vaziri, who led the effort! Please let us know if there
is anything that we can do for the Section as Directors (of course, along
with whoever the Section Liaison is at the time). |
FROM THE CORRESPONDENTS News
from the Spallation Neutron Source, Oak Ridge National Laboratory SNS is entering a six-week maintenance
period following a three and a half month operating period. During the latest operating period, machine
availability averaged 85% of the planned beam time, meeting a major operating
goal. The first target module at SNS is
being prepared for disposal, and one step in that preparation is to make sure
all the mercury is drained from the target assembly. Two 2-inch-diameter holes were drilled
through the front surface of the target module in order to make certain the
draining was complete. As a side
benefit, the coupons removed from the drainage holes will be examined to gain
information about the extent and type of damage the beam produces on the
front surface of the target. News
