It has been a busy year thus far.  The Deep South Chapter made a donation to the brand new LSU HPS - the newest student branch of the Health Physics Chapter.  We would like to congratulate Shayna Loebig for spear-heading this effort.  The students held their first meeting, dinner and a movie (on the making of the bomb), in December.  Other members of the student chapter include Lyndsey Kelly [President-elect] and Robert Steffes [Secretary].

The chapter is pleased to announce its newest slate of officers for the 2006-2007 year.  Balloting was conducted electronically via e-mail.

President:   Dr. Wei-Hsung Wang  weihsung@lsu.edu

Past-President:   Dr. Lorraine M Day  day@lsu.edu

Vice President/Treasurer: Ms Mary Haik   maryhaik@lsu.edu

Secretary:   Mr. James Pate  james.pate@LA.GOV

Board Members:  Dr. Lorraine M. Day  day@lsu.edu

   Lyndsey R. Kelly  lkelly2@lsu.edu

Dr. Brian Dodd, President-elect designate was hosted by the Deep South Chapter on Feb 9 thru 10, 2006.  Dr. Dodd did double duty presenting, not just on, but two seminars during his visit.  Dr. Dodd first met with members of the State department of Environmental Quality, where he was hosted by former chapter treasurer, Daniel Van Gent.  Dr. Dodd met with emergency planning members..  On Friday, Feb 10, Dr. Dodd met with Board Member Dr. L. Max Scott for breakfast and a discussion of source security.  This was followed by a tour of the unique CAMD/LSU facility, the only state supported synchrotron ring in the world.  After a brief discussion with Drs. Erno Sajo, Kenneth Hogstrom and Kip Matthews on the status of the health and medical physics program at LSU, Dr. Dodd presented his light-hearted but seriously important seminar on “Tips for Technical Talks” to the LSU graduate students.  Following this seminar, Dr. Dodd met with members of the newly formed undergraduate LSU student chapter and with Dr. Kip Matthews to discuss items relating to homeland security.  Dr. Roy Parker also met with Dr. Dodd during his visit on issues pertaining to the transportation of radioactive material.  Dr. Dodd completed his day by giving a superb talk on “The IAEA and Control of Radioactive Sources.”  Note: to those chapters who have yet to host Dr. Dodd, your members are truly in for a treat!

Through this medium, the Deep South Chapter would like to especially thank Dr. Dodd for giving so unselfishly of his time.  At a time when the economies of both the states of Mississippi and Louisiana [who make up the Deep South Chapter] have been so devastated by the recent hurricanes, the opportunity to meet with the President-Elect is particularly poignant.  Many members have not and will not have the opportunity to travel to the either the mid-year or to the annual meeting.  Thank you again, Brian for your willingness to meet with so many of the Deep South Chapter members.

Outgoing Chapter President

The deep south chapter is pleased to announce the creation of the LSU Student chapter of the HPS. This new chapter was spear-headed by Shayna Loebig, a student worker in the LSU radiation safety office. They will hold their first inaugural dinner on December 9, 2005 - details to follow. More more information please contact Shayna Loebig at sloebi2@lsu.edu.
The Deep South Chapter offers their heartiest congratulations!

In other news, hurricane Katrina has displaced many, including our radiation safety officers at the University of New Orleans, the LSU Medical School and Tulane Universities. Our hearts go out to all our members in Mississippi and Louisiana adversely affected by Katrina and Rita. Let us know how you are doing - by contacting Lorraine Day: day@lsu.edu. Katrina and Rita have left us much to do with less staff and resources.

Long time member Dan Van Gent has moved from the LSU Radiation Safety Office to the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality. We wish him the best in his new position. Congratulations Dan!

Kiffin Luce has left the LSU Radiation Safety Office to work the next year for Katrina recovery.

Best,

Lorraine
